New England Basque Club Joins Korrika

Attendees ran, walked, cheered, and celebrated Euskara together in the 24th biennial Korrika event, in support of promoting the Basque language around the world.
Attendees savored a feast of traditional dishes: Seafood paella, hearty marmitako (fisherman’s stew), sizzling txistorra (spiced sausage), rich cheeses, and creamy cheesecake, paired with Txakoli (white wine), Reino de Altuzarra (red wine), and non-alcoholic refreshments. Basque music set the festive mood!

Attendees experienced the thrilling Basque sport renowned for the fastest-moving ball in sports. Professional Jai Alai players showcased their athletic prowess as they competed in doubles with a cesta—a long, curved wicker basket—hurling a hard-rock, goatskin-covered ball at lightning speed. Matches were played to 15 points and the action on the court was matched by the lively atmosphere, with food and drinks enjoyed by all.

The spirit of the Basque Country was experienced with a fun-filled day of Basque traditions, food, and community, as well as thrilling rural sports, such as: Harrijasoketa (stone lifting), aizkolari challenge (wood chopping — main event!), txingaruten (weight carrying), tokorbatzen (corn collecting), sokatira (tug of war)…and more! With live music, delicious food, and a festive atmosphere!
